Birx is located in the extreme south-western corner of Thuringia, just one kilometer from the border triangle of Thuringia, Hesse and Bavaria. The distance from the village to the former inner-German border is only 0.2 km.
The village lies on the southern slope of the high plateau between the elevations of Dungberg (773 m) and Grabenberg (796 m).
