The town of Wedel belongs to the district of Pinneberg in Schleswig Holstein and has around 34,000 inhabitants. Wedel is located to the west of Hamburg, directly on the Elbe. Wedel is fully covered by the Hamburg public transport network HVV. The S1 connects Wedel with Hamburg city center (35 minutes' drive) and then leads to Ohlsdorf, where it splits into two directions, namely to Poppenbüttel and Hamburg Airport (60 minutes' drive). The city bus service is operated by Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein (VHH) within the HVV. There are also regional bus routes to Haseldorf, Uetersen, Elmshorn, Pinneberg and Norderstedt.

Line 189 also runs from Wedel S-Bahn station via Schulau and Hamburg-Rissen to Blankenese S-Bahn station (12 minutes' drive), where passengers can connect to the S-Bahn and other bus lines. Wedel offers numerous tourist attractions, such as the Willkomm-Höft ship welcome facility, the Hamburg marina, northern Germany's largest marina, which currently has 1,950 berths and is one of the tourist hubs on Wedel's shores in summer, and the Wedeler Marsch, a nature reserve and wetland area.
