The village lies on the western foothills of the Rothaargebirge, in a basin between the Milsenberg (669 m) in the north-east, the Habbecke (644 m) in the east, the Riemen (677 m) in the south-east, the Goldener Zapfen (640 m) in the south, the Lümke (623 m) in the south-west, the Strauchelberg (625 m) in the west and the Schroersberg (610 m) in the north-west. To the north, the valley is drained by the Heinsberger Bach to the Hundem. Heinsberg lies directly on the watershed between the Rhine and the Sieg and is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park. It is touched by the Rothaarsteig, a supra-regional hiking trail from Dillenburg to Brilon. The Schwarzbach system nature reserve with Haberg and Krenkeltal is located in the district.
