The city district Innenstadt-West includes the historic center of the city within the former Wallanlagen and thus also the shopping center and the U-Tower. To the south of this are urban residential neighborhoods, first the hospital district around the Dortmund Clinic, then the Kreuzviertel and the sports facilities (Signal Iduna Park, Westfalenhallen, Stadion Rote Erde and Helmut-Körnig-Halle) in the former Dortmund Volkspark. To the west of the actual city center, there is dense residential development around Rheinische Strasse. This part of the district is densely built up with architecture from around 1900. Some of the houses used as residential buildings in the traffic-calmed side streets south of Rheinische Strasse have been well renovated.
