Derendorf belongs to the ring of neighborhoods that developed rapidly after the Düsseldorf fortifications were razed at the beginning of the 19th century. Industrialization, the railroad and the powerful impulses of the Gründerjahre accelerated the development. Intact middle-class residential areas can be found here. And the proximity to the city center makes Derendorf a sought-after residential location. Abandoned industrial and railroad areas await conversion into residential and administrative areas. In Wilhelminian-style neighborhoods, public green space is scarce. That's where the large central northern cemetery also has the value of a park. The graves of many prominent Düsseldorfers can be found here; the writer Rose Ausländer, who spent the last years of her life in Düsseldorf, also found her final resting place here. Derendorf is nevertheless young. An interesting young pub scene and good shopping facilities are among the advantages of the district. The University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf in the immediate vicinity and other private higher education institutions have created an urban, dynamic new scene. Pubs, restaurants, bars as well as diverse shopping opportunities characterize the current cityscape.
