Why is Brehmstrasse in Düsseltal, which all Düsseldorfers know better as the zoo district, actually called Brehmstrasse? Exactly: It was the famous zoologist Alfred Brehm ("Brehms Tierleben"), who in the 19th century was often a guest of the Düsseldorf animal protection society "Fauna" and is said to have suggested the construction of a zoo. But that is history: during the Second World War, the entire area sank into rubble. The memory lives on in the popular name of the zoo district. When people think of the street name, however, they think first and foremost of the ice stadium on Brehmstrasse, where the Düsseldorf EC celebrated numerous successes before moving to the new ISS DOME. The Zoopark, which is now located on the site of the former zoo, is a kind of green lung for this part of town with its pond, meadows and playgrounds. Düsseltal is altogether a well greened district. Thanks to its parks and beautiful avenues, along which old tenement houses and handsome villas can be found, Düsseltal is one of the city's preferred residential addresses.
