Often at the focal point of German and European politics, the history of the "Mother City of Breisgau" goes back over 4000 years.
Based on the painful experiences of its eventful history and aware of the need for different peoples and cultures to live together in peace, the people of Breisach were the first in Europe to vote for a united and free Europe in a referendum on July 9, 1950 with 96% of the electorate, the basis for the honorary title of "European City".
